Early 30’s Sugar Factory Van Wandelen BV got started. For almost a hundred years, this family company handles all production in-house.
Jan van Wandelen, grandfather of current owner Hans began in Amersfoort manufacturing traditional sweets. Wine balls, candy canes and ice chocolates are handmade in small workshop.
Loek van Wandelen, son of John, took over the workshop in the 50’s. He wanted to introduce something new to the candy market and coined the now well-known Old Dutch candy: licorice, cinnamon and pepermuntballs and wafels.
The origin of the balls
Years later Hans began to assis in the company. Father and son thought it was time for something new, a kind of candy with ‘something in it’. Thus, the sour and salty balls came about: balls, each with its own flavor and a true taste sensation when the powder inside is released.
The balls were such a success, that they needed to search for a bigger location. In December 1984, the new factory was opened in Nijkerk, where till this day production occurs.
The balls are not only sold domestically, but are also popular in Scandinavia, Ireland, Germany and the rest of the Benelux.
